Abstract
Physicians, dentists and nursing staff need to appreciate
the importance of the oral cavity as a sensitive, intimate
interior space in the living body. It has unique
qualities relating to body, soul and spirit. Medically the
oral cavity is probably the part of the human body that
requires most outpatient medical care if we take dentistry
to be part of basic medical care provision. We certainly
must not underestimate the contribution which
dentists made to health and quality of life especially in
the second half of life.
