Abstract
Prevention is today largely an avoidance strategy which does not consider the individual. In theory the role of the individual is coming to be more widely accepted, though without reference to areas for practical implementation. Examples of insight into and working with well-being are taken from history. In antiquity, it was a question of balancing the ’juices’; in medieval times in Europe of making the connection with Christian salvation beliefs. The idea of the ’art of living’ came in the romantic period. In the second part of the paper, a summary is given of aspects of prevention in the anthroposophical view. For a positive approach it is essential firstly to acknowledge the individual disposition, secondly to give the emotional life its due, and thirdly to consider the whole biography.
