Abstract
The paper is based on a talk on the subject of pain which the author gave at the German Anthroposophical Medical Association’s autumn conference. Possible ways of treating pain are shown by means of case records. Complementary to the standard treatment or replacing it, these offered help even where conventional approaches did not prove adequate. Medical treatment is considered, and also the significance of the encounter in the treatment of pain and the role of external applications. The case records are from the field of oncology, the treatment of back problems, headaches and complex pain disorders. Distinction is made between the use of potentized poisons (which often give rapid analgesia) and a ‘model-type’ action with anthroposophical medicines made of non-toxic raw materials which often effect fundamental healing after an extended period of treatment. Solum and betony (Stachys officinalis) are considered in more detail.
